Substance Use Disorders
A Shape-Shifting
Illness
It is a singular disease that manifests in various forms and terminology.
Abuse. Dependency. Alcoholism. Self-medication. Alcohol use disorders. Substance use disorders. If you haven’t encountered addiction personally, it’s important to understand this: the majority of individuals grappling with addiction do not wish to find themselves in that situation. If they could overcome it independently, they certainly would. For most, addiction creates a state of survival, as they navigate life from one drink, one smoke, one pill, or one injection to the next.
A Transformative Change.
Opioid Use Disorders
We once labeled those struggling with addiction with harsh, judgmental terms: drunks, junkies, potheads, and more. Most people facing addiction don’t identify with these names; they don’t see themselves that way.
Instead, they might think: I’m not like them. Those names are for others. I drink daily but I’m fine. I take pills to relax at night—that’s all. I only drink on weekends. I use weed to relax, pills to get through work, and others to sleep. Everyone has vices—what's the issue? I’m following my doctor’s advice and not hurting anyone but myself. I’ll quit tomorrow, after this work project, or gradually after the holidays.
If you recognize these statements in yourself or a loved one, it may indicate an alcohol or substance use disorder. It’s vital to seek help before the situation worsens. At Restored Life, we offer understanding and support to navigate the path to recovery.
